Indian Armed Forces

With the terrorists being ’sanitized’ and reports coming out on how slow and confused the Indian armed forces were, I am going to try and establish what makes up our armed forces and tell you what they are armed with -

Indian Police

They are by far the most ineffective unit when it comes to dealing with hostile armed terrorists. Now, don’t me wrong, they are pretty effective when it comes to hunting down petty criminals. However, being heavily underfunded and corrupt, these should definitely not be our first line of defense when it comes to terrorists. Keep in mind that most of the constables don’t have a weapon and are given a stick (lathi) instead. The weapons training is just a formality and ones who do have guns, are given bolt action Lee Enfield rifle clones from WWI era. The ‘officers’ are given 9mm Berettas and indian made pistols which are more of a place holder than anything else.

NSG (National Security Guards) (equivalent to SWAT, SAS, GSG, etc)

This is a special response unit made up of SAG (Special Action Group) and SRG (Special Rangers Group). These are our primary anti-terrorist squads and double up for protecting important politicians and the only units to be tactically trained to fight terrorists. This unit should be our first line of defense when under attack. They are armed with MP5s, PSG1, and some variations of AKs and INSAS rifles.

MARCOS (Marine Commandos) (equivalent to Navy SEALS)

These are specialized navy commandos trained for stealth and combat effectiveness. They are usually armed with 7.62mm assault rifles, Sterling MK4 assault rifles, cyanide-tipped crossbows and grenades. They also have a quick reaction section which is armed with AK-47 and MP5s for close quarter combat. This unit was also used to flush out the terrorists in the recent attacks in Mumbai.

ATS (Anti Terrorist Squad) (equivalent to DHS)

This is more of a tactical intelligence unit focusing on preventing attacks on Indian soil. This squad is made up of ex RAW agents and top police personnel. They aren’t really armed to kill but are effective in what they do.

RAW (Research and Assistance Wing) (equivalent to CIA)

One of the most secretive intelligence agencies in the world(the way it should be). I doubt anyone except themselves know what they are armed with but my guess is that they are armed with pretty much everything under the sun or whatever is needed.

***

Note that most of the casualties in the recent attacks on Mumbai were before the NSGs and MARCOS were deployed to counter the terrorists. There have been reports that the terrorist weren’t stopped initially despite the presence of a large number of police personnel. Being heavily outgunned, I’m not surprised that the police were running for cover when the terrorists opened fire. The situation was back in control once the more elite and tactically trained teams from the NSG and MARCOS were deployed.

Everything that I have said so far is an aggregate of all the reports that I have read so far on the incident. I figured that this is least that I could do shed some light on the recent events and pay tribute to the armed forces protecting our country. Mumbai

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past couple of days trying to find more information about the attacks. I realize that I know next to nothing about the counter-terrorism operations in India and the SWAT-equivalent units. Looks like the NSG, STF and MARCOS commandos have done a great job so far. Today is definitely one of those days that I feel proud to be an Indian and wish I had joined the army.

We will have to wait for things to settle down before we hear better and more reliable information on who these people were and what it is that they were trying to do.

ah..my knee..

2 weeks ago, I decided to go out running to train for the Seattle marathon. While running downhill I felt a slight pain in my knee (like a sprain) but decided to keep running for another 2 miles before I couldn’t run anymore. I took the bus back, limped around for a whole week and used a lot of bengay. I let another week pass for things to heal before I decided to run again today to prepare for the marathon this Sunday. I ran about 3 miles before my knee started hurting again. Looks like my marathon run might be over before it even starts off.. :(

I think it might have something to do with my shoe as well.. gah! I’m totally bummed out now.

Shazam

I’ve been using the Shazam app on my brother’s iPhone to find the names of all the songs that I really like and heard on the radio. The find of the century has to be the one below. This one brings back so many many memories from all the fashion shows that I participated in high school. I wish I could go back in time… This ends my 5 year quest to find the name of the artist and the song.

Do yourself a favor – turn up the volume, close your eyes and get lost in this awesome mix..

A new beginning..

I got my brother’s x60 tablet after he bought himself a Macbook. This meant that I get my hands on the awesome tablet PC. I’ve already spent a lot of time installing all the apps that I think I would need on it but there is one application that stands out and **WUBI** is the name. Wubi is the easiest way to run linux on your machine with an existing installation of windows. The installer works from within Windows and uses the Windows boot loader to setup the dual boot. This also makes it really easy to uninstall and a pleasure to work with.

I would highly recommend this to anyone to is starting out with Linux and wants to try it out..

It’s Official

I am officially employed at Microsoft Corporation after I graduate in June 2009. i signed my offer papers yesterday and picked a start date as well and there is no going back now. I spent the evening before that, with my manager, playing pool and some NDA-talking. Soon, I will be sitting in a cubicle and churning out lines and lines of code to test lines and lines of other people’s code.

Other than that, this week’s been pretty busy with school. With 3 weeks left until finals, things are getting busier than ever. I spent the Friday evening in Tacoma, where my friend was getting back together with his band after some 2 years. Makes me wish that I had stuck to playing guitar and could afford it when I was back home. I guess it’s never too late.

Senior year

It’s 3AM on a Monday morning and I’m still working on my project. I did slack off a bit yesterday/Sunday and dozed off for a couple of hours but this quarter is just ridiculous. I think I’ve b****ed enough about this quarter. I hate it and it only gets worse from here. 3 weeks left and I think I might just make it out of this one, alive.

Oh and I will be ‘officially’ signing my offer at Microsoft this week after hanging out with my manager in a couple of days and ending my job search in California. Looks like the job market is really rough this year. A bunch of my friends are having a hard time getting to second round interviews at the major software companies(Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, etc) and as far as I know, they are one of the smartest people in the department too. If someone from UW CSE can’t find a job around here, the economy must really suck…
