Life as a CSE major..

Its about 10:15PM in the night and I just got out of my lab for a quick refreshment (aka. dinner). As usual, with me being down in the basement (which is nuclear safe, btw) I instantly received about 4 voicemails and numberous text messages as I came into contact with the outside world and my phone was free to listen to the airwaves again.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the calls that I was returning, just now -

*****

Me: Hey man, wassup

Friend : wassup…

Me: Well, I just got out of the labs…so just returning your call

Friend : Wow… no way!

******

And then, the conversation continued… but it also made me realize that not everyone spends their days & nights in an underground lab looking at a monitor for hours. I wonder how he would have reacted, had I told him that I was planning to go back to the labs and hopefully get back before sunrise for a quick nap before my 8:30AM class (as is customary at this time of the quarter).

The good part (or the sad part, as some see it) though, is that I enjoy these session and there is no substitute for that feeling when your device/server/whatever, finally starts working at 5 in the morning while you are high on sugar(skittles) and caffiene(coke, dew, etc.)

Adios.

PS. On a side note, I killed my car (read. battery) again by leaving the lights on. I think this is the 7-8th time in about 2 years that I’ve had to jumpstart my car :)

The Exorcist

It was my friend’s birthday yesterday and a few of us got together and had some Baskin&Robbins icecream cake. The last time I had one of those was my 13th birthday in Maryland and I have some great memories from that. Anyways, after a lot of talking and singing and dancing, we eventually started talking about ghosts and spirits and how we should ’summon’ them that night.

It was entertaining to see a bunch of 20-somethings be afraid of ghosts and spirits. It’s hard to be afraid of things you don’t believe in, be it the good kind or the evil kind. A few of us then thought it would be a great idea to start watching ‘The Exorcist’ at 12 in the night and it sure was. I’ve never laughed so hard while trying to watch a supposedly scary movie like that. It was also fun scaring the other people from time to time, who were really scared. :)

On a side note, I realized that the windows in my car need some defogging/cleaning/whatever. I was genuinely scared of driving yesterday especially when it was pouring outside and I couldn’t see a thing while travelling at 60mph and my windscreen and windows kept fogging up.

On another side note, I’ve started noticing a lot of exploitation attempts on my website, lately. The last hit was sometime last night originating from Izmir, Turkey – does this SQL injection exploit look familiar to you?

It looks as though they are trying to configure my site to forward to their location and run a command… if you know any better, ping me!

Gas prices…

I finally drove around in my car for a bit today. Today being nice and sunny, I also decided to take my car for a wash and it burnt a deep hole in my pocket with gas prices exceeding $4.50/gallon for regular. Oh and I decided to take my car for an oil change and service check up and got back with a quote for $2500 in repairs. I just laughed and left the shop and later called my brother (the one with the dough) and we had laugh together. Why on earth would anyone considering dropping $2500 on repairs when the blue book value of the car is nearly the same ??

And gas prices just went up by about 10 cents in 8 hours….
