Manager

Having a great mentor/manager is definitely a bonus when you start working. Micrsoft Legal cleared me to start working earlier today based on my work permits, etc. My manager’s reponse to that made me feel important :)

Woo hoo!  Looking forward to getting you back in the team!

How you been?  I haven’t chatted to you in a while.  We should grab another beer or a game of pool again soon.  How’s the schedule looking?”

I guess thats what makes him a good manager, one that keeps his army of coders happy. I’m not complaining. I like the attention. Don’t be jealous.

Pictures

The pictures from the Maui trip are all up on the Photos page. Feel free to browse through them. I’ve tried my best to categorize them according to the locations.

In other news, I got a new keyboard and mouse from Microsoft for a survey that I helped with. It is awesome but expect to see a lot of typos in the coming days as I get used to this thing.

MS Company Picnic

Every year, Microsoft hosts a company picnic for it’s employees. The picnic includes free food, activites among things. They even provide a free shuttle service to and from the venue. This year’s picnic was awesome fun and my brother and I had a great time. They even had a motocross freestyle in the venue and some Japanese drummers putting up a show. Here’s a video taken from my phone -

Want some free stuff?

I drink about 1 liter (~30 ounces) of black tea and 1 liter of coke per day. Blame it on the free beverages at Microsoft :)

Work, life and Layer Cake

My work at M$ is picking up steam and I got assigned to a new project today. Unfortunately, I’m under an NDA and will have to kill you if I told you what I am doing. And I’m starting to like being secretive. I got to see a lot of new stuff that’s coming up in the company, the next desktop and mobile OS, talks about the one after that, integration with web services and so on.

Frankly, the company isn’t as boring as most people think and neither is it dying because of Apple and Google. For all those who might wonder if it’s too late to join the company : No it isn’t. Ofcourse, this also depends on the teams that you work for but the mobile division is gonna be real hot for the next couple of years. Give us 14 months and you will know what I am tyring to say..

My website’s has been generating a lot of traffic lately. This includes friends and family as well as the search redirects from Google. My article on the eye-twitching has been attracting a surprising amount of traffic over the past couple of days. Web stats are always interesting (thanks to Google Analytics). Unfortunately, more traffic also means that I need to pay more attention to what I write these days. This can no longer be the 10 minutes before I go to sleep everyday thing, or maybe it can be… not that I really care. Anyways, I’ll try hard to atleast spell check before I post.

I watched Layer Cake after a long time today. Definitely up there in my list of good movies. I hate open ended movies but I love ones that have an anti-climax. I’m not going to spoil this anymore for you. This is definitely worth your while. For those of you that have some time to kill, you should visit TED. There’s something for everyone in there. I like the ones that debate on the existence of God but I’ll reserve my views for another time…

Work, Olympia and more…

There’s just so much to tell that I can’t really figure out where to start. Work is great and I’m definitely learning a lot. Being in the industry is so much more different and exciting than being in school. I know a lot of people who said school was really good and I should stay back and enjoy my life in school, but it’s a lot like when you are small and you always wanted to be older and in college and when you get there, you realize being a kid was way more fun… Oh well, I can’t wait to get out of school and start working…. school’s just not my thing :(

I just came back from a 2 days camping trip with my brother and some friends in the Olympia Moutain Ranges. Bring the pyro-maniac that I am, I had a ton of fun with the firewood at the campsite. A lot of interesting conversations and a ton of pictures taken. I’ll link to them pretty soon.
