Life as a CSE major..

Its about 10:15PM in the night and I just got out of my lab for a quick refreshment (aka. dinner). As usual, with me being down in the basement (which is nuclear safe, btw) I instantly received about 4 voicemails and numberous text messages as I came into contact with the outside world and my phone was free to listen to the airwaves again.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the calls that I was returning, just now -

*****

Me: Hey man, wassup

Friend : wassup…

Me: Well, I just got out of the labs…so just returning your call

Friend : Wow… no way!

******

And then, the conversation continued… but it also made me realize that not everyone spends their days & nights in an underground lab looking at a monitor for hours. I wonder how he would have reacted, had I told him that I was planning to go back to the labs and hopefully get back before sunrise for a quick nap before my 8:30AM class (as is customary at this time of the quarter).

The good part (or the sad part, as some see it) though, is that I enjoy these session and there is no substitute for that feeling when your device/server/whatever, finally starts working at 5 in the morning while you are high on sugar(skittles) and caffiene(coke, dew, etc.)

Adios.

PS. On a side note, I killed my car (read. battery) again by leaving the lights on. I think this is the 7-8th time in about 2 years that I’ve had to jumpstart my car :)

Alarm

Q) How do you know that you have been up for too long?

Ans) When you have an alarm at 5:30AM, to remind you to go to sleep :( sigh…

Compiling..again

I’m back to working on the hardest class this quarter – Compilers. Writing a Java parser in Java is causing a recursive stack overflow in my head.

Help…anyone?

Projects

This is pretty much the first time in college that I have felt this hopeless, working on a project. I’m taking ‘Compilers’ this quarter and it’s probably the hardest class ever and I have no idea how to complete my project. I have 3 of 6 parts done and have no clue where to start with the rest. And guess what??!! the project was due last night! :(

On a side note, I participated in a programming competetion this weekend for a crack at the ACM regionals. Our team was placed 7th and we got some free Google t-shirts for our finish. If you are interested, here is a link to the problems and solutions as well – http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/reges/acm/results.html

Long Day

It been a long one so far. I had a midterm, 2 projects and career fair to go to, today. The projects kept me holed up in the labs for about 10 hours straight until turn in. I’m really starting to like C programming and am currently playing around with some socket programming. Good stuff.

The coding run was followed by a food run on the Ave at 1 in the morning in a Chinese restaurant with an interesting food menu. It was great to see kids partying it up on the roads after all the bar runs while my friends an I were lugging around backpacks with big books and laptops. I’m starting miss things that I’ve never done in college.

Who said Computer Engineering wasn’t a lifestyle?
