Life as a CSE major..

Its about 10:15PM in the night and I just got out of my lab for a quick refreshment (aka. dinner). As usual, with me being down in the basement (which is nuclear safe, btw) I instantly received about 4 voicemails and numberous text messages as I came into contact with the outside world and my phone was free to listen to the airwaves again.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the calls that I was returning, just now -

*****

Me: Hey man, wassup

Friend : wassup…

Me: Well, I just got out of the labs…so just returning your call

Friend : Wow… no way!

******

And then, the conversation continued… but it also made me realize that not everyone spends their days & nights in an underground lab looking at a monitor for hours. I wonder how he would have reacted, had I told him that I was planning to go back to the labs and hopefully get back before sunrise for a quick nap before my 8:30AM class (as is customary at this time of the quarter).

The good part (or the sad part, as some see it) though, is that I enjoy these session and there is no substitute for that feeling when your device/server/whatever, finally starts working at 5 in the morning while you are high on sugar(skittles) and caffiene(coke, dew, etc.)

Adios.

PS. On a side note, I killed my car (read. battery) again by leaving the lights on. I think this is the 7-8th time in about 2 years that I’ve had to jumpstart my car :)

Long Day

It been a long one so far. I had a midterm, 2 projects and career fair to go to, today. The projects kept me holed up in the labs for about 10 hours straight until turn in. I’m really starting to like C programming and am currently playing around with some socket programming. Good stuff.

The coding run was followed by a food run on the Ave at 1 in the morning in a Chinese restaurant with an interesting food menu. It was great to see kids partying it up on the roads after all the bar runs while my friends an I were lugging around backpacks with big books and laptops. I’m starting miss things that I’ve never done in college.

Who said Computer Engineering wasn’t a lifestyle?

Apparently..

..I’m still human. No matter how much I tried to stay awake, my human’ness took over and I had to crash for a couple of hours. I don’t know if that counts as sleeping but it sure helped me stay up all day today. I got done with almost everything that was/is due this week except for a homework due on Friday and a project whose deadline was pushed back to next Friday.I’m celebrating this by bowling with some friends, watching a re-run of the final presidential debate and now, an episode of south park.

I’m all checked in for tomorrow’s flight to DC. Hopefully, I wake up in time for the flight.

Sleepless in Seattle…again

The last time I ‘slept’ was Sunday night. Barring a couple of naps totalling 3 hours, I’ve been awake for much of the past 42 hours.

I have three more assignments and a project to finish up before Thursday afternoon, when I fly out to DC. Looks like it might be another 24 hours before I get anywhere close to being able to sleep.

This is MADNESS…this is ME

Body clock

My body clock seems to have gotten confused in the process of adapting from the tropical Hawaii climate to the temperate rainy Seattle. I woke up at 12:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, ate lunch, went back to sleep at 6PM and woke up again at 10:30PM.

Now, it’s about 4AM on Sunday and I’m wide awake. Arrgh..

Just another Manic Monday

I finally returned my rental car today and never felt any better. Drove to work and it took me about 30 mins to walk back home in the evening. Business as usual, work’s getting busy and you know the rest.

In other news, I think I’m getting a bad case of senioritis. It’s already the 9th week of my internship and I wake up about 2 hours later than I used to, when I started. I strolled in to work at 10 AM this morning and that’s just ridiculous by most standards. On a side note, nobody really cares when I come to work, as long as I get the work done. It’s still weird when you walk in and your manager and his manager have been there for more than an hour and a half, hard at work.

*Must go to bed early*

Exhausted

No matter how much tea you drink, how many cans of coke you consume, your lack of sleep will come around and bite you in the @$$. I haven’t been sleeping well lately and it caught up to me this morning. I took me about 30 mins to wear my contacts but I ended up tearing it at work because my eyes were way too dry. Now I wouldn’t be too worried if this weren’t my last pair of contacts. So here I am, wearing glasses with an old prescription looking like the nerd that I am.

More dry eyes, sleepiness during the day and I finally came home and crashed for an hour trying to stay up. Woke up really hungry, and made some mashed potatoes and had it with bread. I have to say that that’s probably one of the worst combination of food items you can ever have. I have great respect for the Irish for having survived through this. I’m bored, tired and I wish I had something else other than work to do….
